This week in Mrs Jones's reading group tom Fletcher we have been learning about our taste buds and how they work, we watched a video called operation ouch about taste buds we found out the adults have 5,000 taste buds and children have 10,000 that's double of what adults have compared to children. yesterday our group did an experiment and see what our reaction would be, but I wasn't there yesterday to do the experiment. we also had learnt in the text your taste receptor cells work hard, so they are replaced every week or too. as we get older, it takes longer to replace the cells. We have five different main receptors sour sweet umami bitter and salty.
I am a Year 6 student in the Uru Mānuka Cluster. My teacher is Miss McClelland. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

The creation of the south island
Last week for Mrs Jones's writing group we had to write about a moari legend on about how the south island came to be, first we had to make a plan for our writing. after we did that we had to start writing a template about the legend using our plans, after we finished the template we had to self check buddy check and teacher check then once we have done so we create our blog post.
The creation of the south island
First Rangi (the sky father) had 4 sons Rakiroa Rakirua Rarakiroa and the eldest was Aoraki, he was married to a woman named Pokoharua-te-po but then one day Raki had fallen in love with the earth mother (Papatuanuku) but when pokoharua-te-po had found out she was heartbroken. The brothers got really upset that their father had fallen in love with another women, so the brothers had decided to go down from the havens and see what all the fuss was about and why their father didn’t want their mother anymore.
So then Aoraki and his brothers had set off onto the ocean to go find this woman that their father had fallen in love with and to go check her out and see what was so great about her, but where ever they went the kept on only seeing more and more ocean and no new land or the papatuanuku (earth mother).
But as they were sailing in their waka a storm had started to form in the sky they thought that it was their father telling them to come back home. So as being the oldest Aorkai the leader started to chant a magic karakia that would lift their waka up off the ocean and safely back up to the hevans to the their father.
So as aoraki was chanting the karakia he had messed something up in the karakia so instead of lifting up off the water the waka tipped onto it’s side so the brothers climbed on top of the waka and huddled together as their hair started to turn white then their skin started to become stone, then they started to form into the southern alps Aoraki being the tallest mountain and his brothers being the nearby alps.
Pouakai the glutton
Hey readers!
this week in Mrs Jones's writing group we have been writing about a local moari legend about Poakai the glutton, first we had to do a plan in our writing books then after we had to make a template to write about the legend once finished we had to self check buddy check and teacher check once we have done all those we start our blog post for the legend.
Pouākai the Glutton
Mt torlesse was the largest mountain range but there was a problem one day a giant hast eagle name poakai came to the range and perched himself on top of mt torlesse creating a nest up on the top, he could see far out into the ocean he would catch up the hunters and villagers that would go out hunting for food for the village and he swoop down from his mountain and scoop up the hunters and to devour them at his pleasure.
Every day in the nearby village more and more people would go missing the village were starting to get angry and annoyed that more and more people were getting caught and killed by poākai and taking him up to his nest to never be seen again so one of the most fearless hunters named ruru decided to form a group of 40 hunters and build a trap and kill poākai and bring peace and freedom to the planes one again.
So each night they made a plan to build the trap at night when poākai would be asleep in his nest on the mountain. Each night they would gather around and start building the cage piece by piece, then finally at last it was complete ruru decided he will be the bait being the swiftest and the fastest he will lure poākai to the cage. So ruru got all 40 of the men in the cage then he ran out to the planes teasing poākai getting him to follow ruru back to the cage.
Ruru ran as swift and as fast as he had ever ran before with the giant eagle trailing behind him getting closer and closer finally ruru made it back to the cage running into the door slamming it behind with poākai landing onto the top of the cage. Then pouākai clawed one of his legs into the cage killing some men. Then they started to hack off his leg so poākai put his other leg into the cage killing some more getting his other hacked off. In rage poākai pushed his wings into the cage killing more men. Then hacking his wings off too. Then as the gird was completely helpless.
Ruru ran out of the cage running at poākai clubbing him to death. In succession on killing the pest they decided to climb the mountain in search of any baby's in his nest so they wasted no time and started the climb up the mountain, half way up they start to hear singing it was pouākais babies so they climbed up and finally reached the nest and wasted no time and clubbed them to death. The planes was finally free of pouākai’s wrath and was no longer being held hostage by poākai and could finally hunt again. And they lived happily ever after.
